This exhibit documents a singular moment in the life of the community of Humanities students at Soka University of America. This community possesses shared experiences but no predefined boundary. Its identity does not stem from credits and rosters, and the circumstance of the epidemic revealed this clearly enough. The call for submissions invited current Soka students and alumni to formulate or record their experience of the 2020 shut down, and do so with a view to seek out a possibility of transformation through disruption, frustration and loss. When the epidemic descended, we did not know how long it would last. Now that it has lasted, we doubt it will ever leave. The mark will stay with us. This exhibit captures the singular moods, untold tensions and furtive epiphanies that occurred between these two extremes. Not everything can be cancelled.
